The Last Apprentice Series

The Last Apprentice Series:

The Last Apprentice Series is about a young thirteen year old boy named Thomas Ward, who being a seventh son of a seventh son, can see and hear things others can't. Such The Last Apprenticeas, ghosts and ghasts, he can see witches, and many other things. Because he is what he is, it is naturally his duty to protect his country from these hazards. So he can learn what he needs in order to do what is necessary, he is apprenticed to the local spook, an old man named John Gregory, with a long and complicated past. Together, they complete many dark, dangerous, and life threatening tasks. Such as Facing a creature called the bane, being hunted down by a malevolent witch, and facing the devil himself.

Review:

Characters:

Tom Ward:

I like the character of Tom Ward because it has depth, and he must face many different situations, which make him who he is. You see his character change throughout the book, and he goes through many realistic challenges of which many of us face today. Such as death, love, pressure, outcast, and others. He has changing feelings, and faces much loss as he progresses throughout the books. I think he is an interesting character who has depth, and many realistic issues.

John Gregory:

Hmm, how to begin? John Gregory is a character like Tom, who evolves as you read, but many things are different between the two. Unlike Tom, you begin without knowing much at all about Gregory, but you learn about his complicated past as you progress throughout the story. I think that once again, unlike Tom, John takes some thinking to unravel, but don't get me wrong, its not at all a bad quality.

Book's difficulty level:

Well, I'm going to be upfront, the books are an easy read. They have large print, and the words aren't that difficult to decipher,  but the story's are enjoyable to read, no matter the age.

Each book has a different story to it completely, but they relate to each other, and if the order were to be mixed, it wouldn't make sense. In my opinion, the story's have depth, are interesting to read, and are great for a dull day at the house. Not only that, but the books seem to have a creepy air to them, no matter what time of day, or what part of the book you're reading.

Overall Review:

I love these books because they include magic, sorcery, and horror, but the characters have depth, and still go through life like situations that many of us have faced ourselves. I highly enjoy the books, and they are great when you're looking for something to read, or even re-read.

Before I conclude this review, I must address something that's been annoying me quite a lot. On the back of one of the books, a comment from a different reviewer says that the books are adequate for a person who has outgrown Harry Potter. I HIGHLY disagree with this because, in my opinion, even though they're good books, they are immature compared to Harry Potter, and Harry Potter is far more complicated and aimed for a more mature age than these. Harry Potter is without a doubt, by far more mature than these, and I would recommend Harry Potter to this any day.
