The Thief of Always
Thief of Always, by Clive Barker, is about a young boy of ten or eleven named Harvey, who leads a cruelly slow life, and would do anything to do something interesting. His dreams come true when on an unusually cold autumn day, a man named Rictus tells him about a wonderful world just waiting for him beyond the barrier(literally). As Rictus takes him away from his somewhat-loving parents, Harvey is expecting it to be a lifetime full of fun a sweets. Will it be?
Well yeah, pretty much. Rictus takes him through his familiar streets, until things begin to change. Finally, once they pass the maze of unknown streets, they reach the entrance. Beyond the big, white, and well, basically nothingness, lies the world of holidays everyday, wonderful cooking,
soft beds, and soon to be one of his best friends for life. It would seem like the perfect life, Spring and Easter for morning, Summer and 4th of july for mid-day, Fall and Halloween for evening, and Winter and Christmas for night. For years, time seems to pass like a breeze, Harvey and his friend want to go home. When they ask to leave, they are forbidden, and when they attempt to leave through the mist in which they came, they just somehow turn around. Finally, they decide to deal with the problem at the core. The two friends go in search of the houses owner, and find out, it is the house itself! When they attempt to reason, they get one wish and one wish only. In attempt to destroy the house itself, Harvey wish it to be all four seasons and holidays at once. Making a huge chaos, and destroying the house and barrier, the two escape, desperate to return to their old lives. But it turns out that everyday they spent at the house, was a year in real life. So when they return to their homes, their parents are old and crippled, and they had been missing for many years. Will things ever be the same?
Review:
The Thief of Always is a wonderful book, no matter how old you are or how thick the book is, this book is always a joy to read. It was the first ever official book I read. I read it when i was about 7, and I fell in love with it at once. The story is intruiging, the characters are great, and the settings are amazing. If you were to ask me my what my top five books are, this would be there.
